What is Rotary?
We need to learn what "ROTARY" actually is, leaving behind all those misleading and sometimes malicious publications from websites of dubious origin and quality.
Rotary is a global humanitarian service organization.
Its members are professionals and businesspeople who volunteer their time and services to help others in their communities and around the world, such as hunger, poverty, illiteracy, and environmental protection. One of Rotary International's main programs aims to protect children from polio and eradicate it worldwide.
The purpose
The motto of Rotary is "Service Above Self". The Purpose of Rotary is to encourage and promote the idea of service as the foundation of all worthwhile endeavor, and in particular to encourage and promote:
The promotion and application of the idea of offering services in personal, professional and social life.
The development of human relationships, as an opportunity to offer services.
The promotion of high ethical standards.
The promotion of international understanding, goodwill and peace through the global brotherhood of businessmen and professionals and scientists, united in the idea of offering services.
High ethical values in business and professions, the recognition of the value of all useful pursuits, and the elevation of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to contribute to society.

The story
Το Ρόταρυ ιδρύθηκε την 23η Φεβρουαρίου 1905, στο Σικάγο των ΗΠΑ, από τον δικηγόρο Πωλ Χάρρις και τρεις φίλους του τον Σιλβέστρε Σίλε, ανθρακέμπορο, τον Γουσταύο Λέχρ, μεταλλειολόγο και τον Χιράμ Σόρεϋ, ράπτη.
Η ιδέα του Πωλ ήταν να προωθήσει την συναδέλφωση μέσω της γνωριμίας των επιχειρηματιών.
Για να γίνει ο όμιλος πλήρως αντιπροσωπευτικός των επιχειρήσεων και της επαγγελματικής κοινότητας, μόνο ένας αντιπρόσωπος από κάθε επιχείρηση ή επάγγελμα ήταν δεκτός. Αυτή ήταν η αρχή της βάσης του συστήματος των κατηγοριών των μελών. Σήμα κατατεθέν του Ρόταρυ ήταν και είναι η φιλία και η προσφορά υπηρεσιών σε άλλους.
Σήμερα έχει επεκταθεί με 33.000 Ομίλους σε περισσότερες από 200 χώρες και γεωγραφικές περιοχές με περισσότερα από 1,2 εκατομμύρια μέλη.
Οι όμιλοι αυτοί διοικητικά συγκροτούν 535 Περιφέρειες που με την σειρά τους συγκροτούν 34 Ζώνες σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο.
Στην Ελλάδα ο πρώτος όμιλος ιδρύθηκε το 1928 στην Αθήνα και ο δεύτερος όμιλος το 1934 στην Θεσσαλονίκη.
Οι Ροταριανοί όμιλοι της Ελλάδας ανήκουν στην 2475 Περιφέρεια του Διεθνούς Ρόταρυ με περισσότερα από 1800 μέλη .
Ο Πρόεδρος του Διεθνούς Ρόταρυ εκλέγεται και διοικεί για ένα έτος με Δ.Σ. αποτελούμενο από 17 Διευθυντές, οι οποίοι εκλέγονται για 2 έτη από τις μισές Ζώνες εναλλάξ. Το Δ.Σ. συμπληρώνεται από τον εψηφισμένο για το επόμενο έτος Πρόεδρο και τον Γ. Γραμματέα του Διεθνούς Ρόταρυ. Η δημοκρατική, αντιπροσωπευτική εκλογή και η εναλλαγή των αξιωμάτων κάθε έτος, είναι βασική οργανωτική αρχή του Ρόταρυ σε κάθε βαθμίδα. Με αυτή την αρχή εκλέγεται και ο Πρόεδρος από τα μέλη κάθε Ομίλου, καθώς και ο Διοικητής κάθε Περιφέρειας από αναλογικό με την δύναμη κάθε Ομίλου (της Περιφέρειας) αριθμό εκλεκτόρων.
Οι Ροταριανοί όμιλοι συνεδριάζουν κάθε εβδομάδα σε τακτή ημέρα, ώρα και τόπο για να χαρούν την συναδέλφωση, για να συζητήσουν ενδιαφέροντα και ενημερωτικά θέματα και για να σχεδιάσουν και να υλοποιήσουν προγράμματα προσφοράς υπηρεσιών τοπικού και παγκοσμίου ενδιαφέροντος. Ροταριανοί είναι άνδρες ή γυναίκες, επαγγελματίες ή επιχειρηματίες, οι οποίοι κατοικούν ή εργάζονται στην περιοχή του ανάλογου ομίλου ή στις όμορες περιοχές μ' αυτόν.
Οι συνεδριάσεις αυτές είναι ανοικτές προς το κοινό.
Το Ρόταρυ είναι επίσημος σύμβουλος του ΟΗΕ για ανθρωπιστικά και εκπαιδευτικά θέματα. Συνεργάζεται με καταξιωμένες διεθνείς οργανώσεις, όπως: η UNICEF, η UNESCO, η Παγκόσμια Οργάνωση Υγείας, το Κέντρο Καταπολέμησης Ειδικών Λοιμώξεων των Η.Π.Α, πολλά Ιδρύματα και φορείς.

Symbolism
The name Rotary came from the English word rotation because the first meetings of Rotarians took place at each member's workplace on a rotating basis. The emblem of Rotary is the cogwheel, which consists of 6 spokes, 24 teeth and the wedge in its center.
Rotary's official colors are two: blue, which symbolizes the international character of the organization, and gold, which symbolizes the quality and high level of its activities.
Actions
Rotary classifies its work and offering into 4 axes of operation and activities, which it calls Avenues of Action, specifically:
Internal Action focuses on strengthening teamwork and ensuring the effective operation of the Group.
Professional Action, which aims to promote high ethical values in the exercise of the Rotarian's business and professional life,
Community Action, which aims to identify community needs and meet them with service delivery programs, and
International Action, which aims to promote international understanding, peace and goodwill among all people.
Youth Service was added in 2010 to the other 4 that have been instituted since 1920. It encourages Rotarians to undertake programs and actions that benefit young people.
Each R. Group annually plans and executes a balanced action program that serves all 5 avenues.
Programs
Rotary designs and implements service programs related to • solving youth problems, • combating illiteracy, • vocational guidance, • alleviating hunger, • improving living conditions, • eradicating disease, • restoring disaster relief, • protecting the environment, • caring for our fellow human beings in need, • helping people with disabilities, and much more.
It also has specific programs that Clubs can develop:
Interact – establishing and maintaining a service group for young men and women, aged 14-18.
Rotaract – establishing and maintaining a service group for young men and women aged 18-30.
Global Networking Groups – groups of Rotarians that focus on issues of common interest internationally, including Rotary Action Groups (e.g. blood donors or organ donors) and Rotary Fellowships (e.g. chess players).
Rotary Friendship Exchange – a program that promotes, through the mutual visit of Rotarian families from different countries, the building of international relationships, which can develop into international cooperation for service programs
Rotary Volunteers – a program that provides funding for Rotarians and other qualified professionals to offer their services and expertise to programs in need of assistance.
.Rotary Youth Exchange – a program that promotes international understanding and peace through exchanges between students aged 15-19.
RYLA – an education program for young people, focusing on leadership, civil rights and personal development.
Global Community Service – a joint community service program of Rotary clubs from two or more countries.
Rotary Foundation
In 1917, Rotary established the Rotary Foundation, through which major educational and humanitarian service programs are implemented, such as:
the Polio-plus program to eliminate polio and other childhood diseases from our planet,
the Ambassadorial Scholarships program, the largest privately funded international scholarship program in the world,
the Study Exchange Group program, for young men and women to get to know other countries, cultures and exchange views with their colleagues who practice the same profession, sponsorships for University Professors, to teach in developing countries, implementation of major humanitarian and charitable programs internationally, for hunger, health, humanity, for conflict resolution and the promotion of peace.
